Day 210
Another early start - I went looking for the pelicans again as I so much enjoyed sketching them but they were nowhere to be seen. Instead, there were about 300 women at the swimming area, participating in a triathlon. These are the under 40's, short-swim group waiting for their start. I wish I could draw faster - I haven't caught the feel of the crowd - the line up was in fact about three deep - I think I need a different, more simplified (or more simplifiable) style for people - loads more practice would help too. 12 km cycle, home by 9.30am.

Alison,
I love this sketch! I think you really captured the group amazingly well. As the mother of 3 children who swam competitively as children, I recognized immediately the "arm behind the back" stretch on the swimmer on the left! I'm amazed that you managed to capture gestures and forms of so many in only minutes!

Oh and this reminds me, when I went up to Manchester I saw Salford Docks where they held the swimming events in the Commonwealth Games. They had to treat it with chemicals for sometime before the event to make it clean enough to swim in and it was freezing. Apparently the Australian competitors were the ones who complained longest and loudest! ;)

This is fabulous! I'd love to see it framed as a tryptich with the pelicans.

You did really well with this Alison. the thing about any group is not to get too hung up about how the group started - just keep drawing people and overlap them with others.
